Southern Hemisphere Feng Shui

Unlike many forms of Feng Shui, Early Heaven is as simple to use in the Southern as the Northern Hemisphere.

The key to successfully understanding Early Heaven is to avoid dogma. The terms "north" and "south" are absolutely related to the cold of midnight and the heat of noon respectively. The cardinal points gain their significance from the solar/seasonal cycle not the other way around.

The author, like most visitors to this site, is familiar with life in the Northern Hemisphere, and consequently writes from that perspective. Orienting yourself for Feng Shui in the Southern Hemisphere is simply a case of interpreting "south" as the location of the sun at noon, and "north" as the place where the sun doesn't shine but where you see the still point in the heavens around which the circumpolar stars revolve.

Naturally, east remains east, and west is still west.

Just as there is no "up" or "down" in the weightless environment of space, the North Pole has no inherent superiority over the South Pole. The language of ancient China that talks of the great emperor in the north, ruler of the universe, is merely an accident of geography. We are best advised to be pragmatic and to respect the tradition but act in the light of modern science.
